This was our First stop on our Vagabonding adventure. We landed late at night and had a driver take us to our AirBnb. Never having been here before, it being late at night, unfamiliar with our surroundings and having a driver that spoke very little English, made for a sketchy delivery to our apartment. First of all there are no rules on the roads here! If there are, they are guidelines at best. We have been to Chicago and Shanghai but nothing can prepare you for this. There are lights, intersections and even crosswalks but no one bothers! Cars, busses and taxis do their thing and go wherever they need. Two lanes going the same direction? They fill it three cars wide! Oh and then like a jello dessert, the motorcycles just fill in the gaps, ALL of the gaps including those on the sidewalks! Going the wrong direction and winding between paused cars are just what they do. Oh! You want to cross the street? Close your eyes and step off the curb, maintain a steady pace and watch everything part around you. We are not kidding. If you wait for a pause you will never cross!
Okay, the people are amazingly friendly and the food? Oh my God the food! Just walking down the street you are assaulted with smells that will make your mouth water. You don’t even know what it is and you really do not care because it smells so good. Fill up on a street meal and maybe have a couple beers and your wallet will hardly notice. 100,000 Vietnamese dong is equal to $4.40 USD and you can eat like that all day long! We stayed in District 1 and that is the hub of Tourist activities. From here you can book any number of tours from visiting the Mekong Delta or the Cu Chi Tunnels or just tour around the amazing city that is Ho Chi Minh.
